The Department of ACCOUNTING

Introduction:
The Department of Accounting and Information Systems is a part of the Faculty of Science at the University of Chittagong.

Since the inception of University of Chittagong in 1966, the need for producing university graduates having specialized knowledge in Accounting was felt with due importance. As a result, the foundation of Department of Accounting and Information Systems was laid down in 1968 primarily for offering a 3 year Honours Program and one year Master Program. Since then, Department of AIS has been regarded as a vital supplier of accounting graduates to both public and private sector of Bangladesh. These graduates have been providing invaluable service to various areas including different constituents of money market, capital market, financial management, government accounting, tax accounting etc. Later, the department made a revolutionary step to introduce BBA program for the first time in Bangladesh in 1989 in response to the shifting demand in the fastest growing private sector from mere accounting graduates to graduates having all round knowledge of business with an emphasis of accounting. After successful introduction of BBA Program, the department introduced MBA Program in 1991 and till date the department has taken some bold initiatives for modifying both BBA and MBA program. These initiatives basically include introduction of English language as a medium of study on mandatory basis, elevation of BBA program form 90 credits to 120 credits, introduction of 4 point grading scale instead of traditional grading system, introduction of industry visits for undergraduate and internship program for graduate students. In this backdrop of this glorious background of the department of AIS, its strengths, weaknesses (internal analysis), opportunities and threats (external analysis) are presented as follows:
