The Department of BOTANY

History:
The Department of Botany was established in 1973 under the leadership of Late Professor Dr. M.A. Aziz Khan who became the Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University in 1981.

The department started academic function with the admission of fourteen students to first year B.Sc. Hons. Course in 1973. The Postgraduate course was first offered in 1975 with the admission of only two students, who passed B.Sc. Hons. Examination from Chittagong College, affiliated to Dhaka University; while M.Sc. (Preliminary) courses have been introduced with the admission of 15 students in 1987. At present 100 students are admitted to B.Sc. (Hons.) course having a four years duration in each. The total number of students including M.S., M.Phil, and Ph.D courses is 400. The department has been updated with the introduction of research facilities in different aspects of plant sciences and courses taught are Plant Diversity, Virology, Microbiology, Mycology, Phycology, Origin and Evolution, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, Palaeobotany, Plant Anatomy, Embryology, Palynology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry & Biophysics, Cytology, cytogenetics, Genetics, Limnology, Plant Pathology, Plant Tissue Culture, Economic Botany, Ethnobotany, Phytogeography & Conservation, Forest Pathology & Mycorrhiza, Soil & Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Management, Plant Breeding, Plant Stress Physiology, Plant Nutrition, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Hill Cultivation, Soil Science, Computer Science, Phytopharmacology, Bioinformatics, Biophysical Chemistry etc.

Achievements:
Over the last 39 years, about 1400 students earned M.Sc. So far 14 M.Phil. and 11 Ph.D. degree have been awarded from this department. At present 30 research students are engaged in higher researches leading to M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in this department.

Nineteen teachers having high academic background are now engaged in teaching and guiding research students. Of them nine are Professors, four Associate Professors, four Assistant Professors, two lecturer and one supernumerrary Professor. At present Professor Dr. Mokter Ahmed is the Chairman of the Department.

The department offers B.Sc. (Hons.), comprises of different branches of Botany, namely Plant Diversity, Virology, Microbiology, Mycology, Phycology, Origin and Evolution, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, Palaeobotany, Plant Anatomy, Embryology, Palynology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry & Biophysics, Cytology, cytogenetics, Genetics, Limnology, Plant Pathology, Plant Tissue Culture, Economic Botany, Ethnobotany, Phytogeography & Conservation, Forest Pathology & Mycorrhiza, Soil & Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Management, Plant Breeding, Plant Stress Physiology, Plant Nutrition, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Hill Cultivation, Soil Science, Computer Scence, Phytopharmacology, Bioinformatics, Biophysical Chemistry etc.

The department offers M.S.course, is a one-year degree programme and has been divided into three major branches; a. Plant Diversity and Environment, b. Biotechnology and c. Agro-biotechnology. Each group consisting of four relevant courses.

The department offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses which are mainly based on research; theoritical papers are also includded for promoting current research techniques.

The department has been updated with the introduction of research facilities such as Herbarium, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Garden-based experimental plots, Orchidarium, Conservatory Shade-House, Breeding Center, Memory Garden, Medicinal plant blocks, Natural Arboretum, Installing Analytical Instruments.

The department has been able to almost reduce the academic session problems. There are some bridge programmes between the department and the foreign agencies for carrying advanced research programmes. A good number of research projects suported ny national and international organizations have been successfully completed under the guidence of teachers of this department.

Around 550 reseatrch papers have been published in national and international journals so far by teachers of this department. In addition, some research and text books completed by some of the teachers have been published by national and international publishers. Many teachers and students have presented their research findings in national and international seminars, conferences and symposia. Two websites Medicinal Plants database of Bangladesh - www.mpbd.info and Bangladesh ethnobotany Online Database- www.ebbd.info have been published from the Ethnobotany Laboratory of the department by Dr. Sk Bokhtear Uddin. For the first time, Professor R.K. Kohli, Professor and coordinator, Centre for Environment, Punjab University, Chandigarh 160014, India, joined in this Department under the SAARC Chair, and conducted joint research studies and took part actively in academic programmes in 2008.

Tree plantation programme every year is a unique feature of this department. Students of this department have made a tradition by participating tree plantation programme in the campus as a part of their practical as well as field-oriented training in every session. As an integral part of the courses, the undergraduate and post-graduate students of this department go out on the field trips and botanical expedition periodically. In addition, road side plantation, campus beautification and plantation of aesthetic plants has been also a part of the departmental programme.

An ideal Botanical Garden has been established to the southern part of the University Campus over an area of about 60 acres of undulated land for the conservation of both indigenous and exotic plant species of academic and aesthetic interests. More than 12,000 plants of about 450 species under 160 families of both indigenous and exotic species of timber, fruits, medicinal, spices, beverages, latex, orchids, etc., have been collected and conserved in different blocks. The garden is divided into 15 blocks which are earmarked with their characteristic plants. Two breeding nurseries have been developed where hybridization experiments are conducted for crop improvement programmes. About 70 indigenous orchid species and good number of rare, and aesthetic shade-plants have been conserved in the Orchidarium and Conservatory Shade-House respectively. The Botanical Garden and road side plantation of the campus is run under the supervision of a Professor-in-Charge who has been assisted by a Field Supervisor and 13 field workers.

Awards:
Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Huda of this department achieved UGC AWARD 2008 and Dr. Mohammad Mosarraf Hossain, Associate Professor of this department achieved BAS-TWAS YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD 2010 which are great achievements for the department.

The department recieved 'Prime Ministers National Award for Tree Plantation' in the University/College Category for three consecutive years, such in 2009 3rd prize, 2010 2nd prize and in 2011 1st prize recieved from Honerable Prime Minister by the Chairman Professor Dr. Mokter Ahmed.
