History

The University of Chittagong became the third public university to be set up by the government of Pakistan, and it was officially inaugurated by the then governor of East Pakistan, Mr. Md. Abdul Monem Khan on 18 November 1966. But earlier in 1964 the site for the university had already been selected and a foundation stone was laid by Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan, the then President of Pakistan, at the top of a small hill in the northern part of the campus. It is located at Fatehpur, 22 km. away from the Chittagong city and about one kilometer away to the west from Chittagong-Nazirhat highway. In the beginning there were only four departments to speak of: Bangla, English, History and Economics respectively.

In these four departments, about 200 students were admitted. Professor Azizur Rahman Mallick joined Chittagong University in 1965 as the Project Director. The Chittagong University Ordinance was promulgated on 25 September 1966. Professor A. R. Mallick was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor on 9 October 1966. At present, thirty five departments, three institutes and five research centres are operating in this University.
